BACKGROUND:
John O’Keefe and Karen Read had been dating for over two years. He was a Boston Police Officer and she worked as an equity analyst at Fidelity.
On January 28th, 2022, they joined friends at local bars, drank heavily, and hung out with Brian Albert, a Canton police officer. Around midnight, they left to go to an after party at Albert’s house at 34 Fairview Road in Canton. Allegedly, the couple got into an argument, and Karen claims she dropped John off at the party and left. There was a major snow storm that night.
The following morning, John's body was discovered dead and covered with snow in the front yard at 34 Fairview Rd.
At the first trial, the prosecution argued that Karen killed John by slamming into his body with her SUV because she was in a drunken rage. Assistant D.A. Adam Lally called a slew of witnesses to prove that Karen was drunk and also left the scene of an accident. The defense argued that John was beaten by a rogue cop, federal agent, and a teenager inside the Albert home and Karen was framed for murder. That trial ended in a mistrial with a hung jury.
